About Skibba Builders

About Skibba Builders

Thank you for the opportunity to share with you who we are and what we do at Skibba Builders.

Whether you choose to custom build a home, build an addition, or renovate your present home, the building process has become much more complex over the years. There are numerous decisions to make from the initial planning stage through construction. The choices can seem overwhelming.

At Skibba Builders, we can offer you Jack's expertise and experience. Jack will help incorporate your ideas, explore possibilities, and make suggestions on what products and techniques best meet your specific needs.

Credibility is earned over time. Jack has been part of the building industry for over 40 years. In a few months he will be celebrating 29 years as a general contractor doing business as Skibba Builders. During that time, Jack has earned the respect of his peers and subcontractors that he works with. Jack is part of the crew working on the job, involved in all stages of construction. We believe in doing things right the first time and it is our policy never to cut corners, which insures a superior finished product.

Another asset to Skibba Builders is Michele, who is available in the office. She offers support, researches availability of products, finds the answers to questions in a timely manner, and helps keep things on track, which results in making the process much less stressful.

In business as in life, what you put out comes back to you. When a company cares about people and keeps their best interests in mind - business comes back. Word of mouth is by far our best advertising.

We would welcome the challenge of taking your ideas and dreams and making them into a reality so you can also be proud to say "This is the house that Jack built."

Like father, like daughter: Family backbone of company

Skibbas combine physical, computer
skills in family's construction trade

By NANCY QUICK

When you think of generations working together in the building trade, the first thought is father and son.
For Jack Skibba, 55, owner of Skibba Builders, it is father and daughter. Jack's daughter, Michele Haas, 29, joined the firm in February of 1994. Rather than wield a hammer, she works with a computer.
Regardless of what tools she uses, she has made life a lot easier for her mother and father, Elaine and Jack, because of her organizational skills and ability to get the job done.
Michele has a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. After graduation, she went to work at Golden Eagle Building Center for a while - a job that helped acquaint her with what was on the building market. She already was familiar with building terms, having grown up in a construction family.
She was ready to move on to a different job about the same time her dad was thinking of hiring someone. It was a perfect fit. Neither father nor daughter has a regret.
"Michele brought computer knowledge to the company. She expedites

materials and orders everything for the job. She often meets with the homeowner so she knows what is going on at the jobs," Jack said. "She took away a lot of the pressure."
"Michele has become the detail person," he said. She also takes care of the book-keeping on the computer. That's a job her mother used to do by hand.

Jack is a native of the area and graduate of Lincoln High School. He learned many trades such as masonry, carpentry and plastering by working with his grandfather. "I worked with him during high school," he said.
He also took all wood-working classes he could while in high school.
Following graduation, he began a four-year apprentice-ship while he attended classes at Mid-State Technical College. He worked for Yeske Home Builders during his apprentice-ship and for several years after. He later worked for another contractor for five years before going into business for himself.

At the age of 35, with a wife and two children, he decided it was time. The first home he built was his own. It's a home the Skibbas still live in.
"I had been working as lead man and making decisions for other bosses and decided it was time to do it for myself," he said.
For eight years, he kept one man on the payroll, and they were busy all year with remodeling work.
About 12 years ago, he started building a home a year. Now he is up to four or five homes a year and he keeps a four-man crew busy. "If the home are bigger ones, we only do two a year," he said.
The firm constructs quality homes but has the reputation of being the best remodeler in the area. "We tackle jobs that many companies won't," Jack said.
He says he learned early to always have a remodeling job. Among his specialties are adding a second floor and making the remodeling look like it was part of the original home.
"Word-of-mouth is our best advertising," Elaine said. The Parade of Homes also brings in customers.
A third generation recently joined the firm on a daily basis. Jerad Haas, who was born in January, three months prematurely, comes to work with his mother, Michele, and travels with her to job sites.

Octagon great room heart of the home
3,100 square feet provides plenty of space in home
A beautiful waterfront view and 3,100 square feet of space are just a couple of reasons Duane and Mary Polivka enjoy their Adams county home at 1363 Highway 13 S.
Built by Skibba Builders, it was in the 1995 Parade of Homes.
An open stairway from the foyer leads to the octagon great room that is the heart of the home.
It is a wonderful place to read in front of the fireplace or gaze out the patio doors to the Roche-A-Cri River. There is 630 feet of frontage.
There is plenty of room in the house to entertain friends for an evening or a weekend.
Hardwood flooring in the kitchen and dining area add a feeling of luxury to the home. But more than that, the kitchen is a place where cooking is actually fun.
Everything is handy and the view is wonderful.
There is a spacious master bedroom suite that includes a whirlpool tub in the master bath and a large walk-in closet.
The lower level is finished and there is a walkout basement. Two decks are connected by the walkway.
  The three-car garage is heated.
There are many windows with views in every direction, and several skylights.
Wood, glass and comfort are seen throughout the home.
Before the Polivkas bought the property, it was owned by Nyles Toltzmann who ran a restaurant and campground.
Toltzmann and his wife lived above the restaurant, the Roche-A-Cri Inn.
A fire destroyed the business and the land sat vacant until the Polivkas purchased it.
Skibba Builders, owned by Jack and Elaine Skibba, has been in business for 19 years.
Jack Skibba has been part of the building industry for 35 years using his talents constructing new homes, renovating existing structures and building additions.
"We never cut corners on quality, we understand this is a major investment that should continue to increase in value," he says.

Testimonial - Complete Makeover

Complete Makeover

                                                                               JOHN MANIACI/Daily Tribune
The exterior of the house at 400 Nepco Lake Road owned by Clay and Angie
Williams was built with Lannon stone that was rejuvenated. The second story
is stucco. A chimney bell tower was restored and Spanish red tile was used
to accent the roof. Master craftsmen and stone masons worked to match new
materials with the old materials. There are patios on the east and south sides
of the home.

Clay and I worked with Skibba Builders on a very large and complicated remodeling of a circa 1925 estate. Jack was always encouraging and supportive of our ideas and dreams. We cannot think of a builder that could have such a major and costly project in a timely matter without any major problems.
We are blessed to have chosen Skibba Builders.

Angie and Clay Williams
